Beginning in 2004, a growing group of community organizations have come together to make history at the Marin County Fair by replacing two beer companies as sponsors—and ending alcohol sponsorship and advertising at the Fair. Reducing alcohol advertising and promotion is critical because young people are bombarded everyday with advertisements promoting the consumption of alcohol on television, the radio, in magazines, on the internet and at community fairs and festivals – making youth under the age of 21 often more likely to see marketing for alcohol products than adults. This is particularly concerning because new research shows that exposure to alcohol marketing influences young people’s decision to drink.
